Fob Holder at Second State Press
I was a Fob Holder for a summer and fall session during 2024. Second State Press is a community print shop in the basement of the Crane Arts Building in the Fishtown area of Philadelphia. As a Fob Holder (or as we are called at Second State, a Fob), I worked at the studio eight hours a week in exchange for 24/7 access to the studio to work on my art. During each of my four hour shifts, I completed a small list of shop upkeep tasks, such as sweeping and cutting down fabric into rags; Monitored the computer for the occasional order; and signed in and out members coming to print in the studio. Most of my time during my shifts were dedicated to my own artwork. So much so, that I did not go into the studio outside of those eight hours very often.
A wonderful bonus of the program was that I could attend the printmaking workshops for FREE! I participated in the monotype class and the repeat pattern on fabric screen printing classes. They were both highlights of my Fob experience. Many of the prints that I made during my residency were based on the techniques I learned in the monotype workshop. It is a loose and fun prosses using various textures and layers.
